Synopsis:

Augustine Pursued follows Augustine, who goes to Milan with one thing on his mind–a high-flying career in the Imperial Civil Service. Close on his heels is his mother, Monica, determined to see him succeed, no matter what the cost. But when the cost turns out to be higher than expected and the goal itself loses its lustre, the one who’s been pursuing Augustine all along catches up and his life takes an unexpected turn.

Characters:

MONICA: Mid-fifties. North African Berber. A small and dignified widow.

AUGUSTINE: Monica’s son. Early thirties. Mediterranean-looking.

CARA: Augustine’s concubine. Past the first flush of youth; comfortably domestic in appearance. Lower class. Also plays the BEGGAR.

ALYPIUS: Augustine’s former pupil; now best friend. Late twenties.

PRIAPUS: A demon. Quite acrobatic, and often found in unexpected places.

ADEODATUS: Augustine’s teenage son. Also plays the EMPEROR, AMBROSE, bishop of Milan, the ANGEL and the GUARD.
